About Me

I bought my first property in South Los Angeles in 2012, and I didn't know anything about real estate. My siblings were doing it, so I jumped in. A year later I bought a duplex.

Back then, real estate was a side hustle. My day job was at Investor's Business Daily, where I was a reporter covering ETFs, mutual funds and personal finance. Writing about money made me want to help people manage theirs, so I changed careers and joined Merrill Lynch's financial advisor training program in downtown LA.

Then COVID hit. Everyone in my cohort was redirected to processing Paycheck Protection Program loans for small businesses hurt by the shutdowns, and my advisory career never got off the ground.

COVID hit my properties hard too. Some of my tenants saw LA County's eviction moratorium as a free-rent bonanza and stopped paying. I was featured on TV news three times as a landlord being taken advantage of. I eventually evicted most of them and gave one a cash-for-keys offer to leave.

No one seemed to understand what landlords were going through, so I created the Landlord Love Support Group for owners facing the same ordeal. I also hosted webinars showing landlords how to get through the eviction process in LA County.

Around the same time, my husband and I decided to start over somewhere new. He found a job in Toronto, and we moved to Canada in 2021.

I passed all of the Canadian financial advisor exams and applied to the major banks. I didn't get a single interview. So I pivoted and went all in on real estate. I joined the Real Estate Investment Network (REIN), took their investing course, and bought six properties in my first year.

In my first three years, my properties earned me more than I ever would have made as an entry-level advisor with no contacts and no book of business in a new country. After that first year, I moved into multiplexes and doubled the size of my buildings each time: two units, then four, then eight, then 16.
